The Levels of the Viet Cong
The Viet Cong were organized into three levels:
1. Regular forces operating under the command of the southern communist leadership
2. Full time guerrillas organized into companies serving under provincial leadership
3. A part time self-defense militia, composed of units organized into squads and
platoons used primarily for village defense.
Primarily, the Viet Cong were guerrillas, and it has been said that no one has ever developed an adequate defense against guerrilla warfare.

The Viet Cong's War Tactics
The Vietcong would periodically launch hit-and-run attacks on government installations, military outposts and even district towns in the South. Its most celebrated victory was at the village of Ap Bac in early 1963, when Vietcong soldiers inflicted heavy casualties on the Southern Vietnamese units. The Vietcong also played a primary role in the Tet offensive in early 1968, where they attacked villages, towns and cities in the South.
The Viet Cong's End
The People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) superseded the Viet Cong's combat role and by the end of the war in 1975, the Viet Cong's participations were only minor. After the war, the remaining Viet Cong were integrated into the PAVN.
What does the Viet Cong Flag Represent?
The flag is divided horizontally into two equal parts with a five-point star in the middle. The upper section is red and stands for blood spilled by the people in their alleged fight for peace, represented by blue in the lower half of the flag. The yellow star stands for the Mongoloid race; each point represents a separate class. The top point symbolizes the students. The other points moving clockwise represent farmers, industrialists, merchants and soldiers.
